• WW II bomb found in river near Wroclaw
  • 22.04.2011
Divers removed a 50-kilogramme WW II unexploded bomb, Thursday afternoon, from the vicinity of the Sand Isle, on the River Odra in the centre of Wrocław, south west Poland.

The bomb was discovered and brought to the surface by accident on 14 April by the operator of a dredger, who then put it back in the river and called in a bomb disposal unit.

A special unit of sappers was sent in from Świnoujście in the north of the country and divers spent 20 hours underwater searching for the bomb in an area of 2,000 square metres, at depths ranging from 1 and a half to six metres and in visibility which could be as low as 10 centimetres.

The charge was finally located on Wednesday and identified as a WW II incendiary air bomb filled with napalm.

It was raised from the river bed and will now be transported to a military field where it will be destroyed. (ek)
