Prime Minister Donald Tusk is to attend ceremonies surrounding the beatification of Pope John Paul II on 1 May in Wadowice, the birthplace of the Polish pontiff.

According to a statement released by the Government Information Centre, Friday, Tusk will take part in a ceremonial Mass on the square in the centre of the town in southern Poland, which will be transmitted live from the Vatican.

Afterwards, it is expected that the Prime Minister will visit the family home of John Paul II.

The decision was taken in consultation with President Bronislaw Komorowski, who will be in the Vatican for the beatification ceremony. The speakers of both parliamentary houses are to travel to Rome for the ceremony with Poland’s head of state. (jb)
