• MPs’ expenses at a record high

According to latest party expenditure figures for 2010, the opposition Law and Justice spent more in politicians’ wages and expenses than the ruling Civic Platform.


The figures, which were reported in Thursday’s Rzeczpospolita daily, reveal that Jaroslaw Kaczynski tops the expenditure list, spending 112,000 zloty (28,000 euro) on office workers’ earnings last year.

Meanwhile, the second highest expenses recorded come from Marek Pluta from Civic Platform, who spent 45,000 zloty on car travel.

Civic Platform colleague and former justice minister Andrzej Czuma spent as much as 39,000 zloty on his mobile phone bills, while Norbert Raba, also of the ruling party, managed to fork out over 29,000 zloty on correspondence and promotion.

Rzeczpospolita also points to other expenses incurred by parliamentarians last year. Law and Justice’s Malgorzata Sadurska spent 12,700 zloty on hiring conference facilities for meetings with her electorate.

Zdzislaw Czucha from Civic Platform racked up a bill amounting to 39,700 zloty on books and stationary, while Michal Szczerba spent 25,000 zloty on taxis. (jb)
