• Trust in politicians falls
  • 27.04.2011

A new survey indicates that the public's trust in Poland’s political elite is falling.

Virtually all of the high-ranking politicians cited in the poll appear less rosy in the eyes of the voters. A notable exception is Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who nevertheless remains less popular than many of his rivals.

Top of the rankings and most trusted is President Bronislaw Komorowski, who 63 percent of respondents championed as a trustworthy man. However, he's down 3 percent since March.

Next in line is Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. 50 percent of respondents found the Oxford-educated politician an upstanding minister, again marking a 3 percent decline since last month.

Sikorski was followed by head of the Democatic Left Alliance (SLD), Grzegorz Napieralski, who at 47 percent is down six percent since March.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk is also down 3 percent, notching up 46 percent backing.

The pattern was followed across the board, with only Leszek Balcerowicz and Jaroslaw Kaczynski bucking the trend: Leszek Balcerowicz - 45 percent (+3), Ewa Kopacz - 38 (-3), Marek Belka - 37 (-1), Grzegorz Schetyna - 33 (-4), Thomas Nałęcz - 33 (-6), Jaroslaw Kaczynski - 31 (3), George Miller - 30 (-4), Bogdan Klich - 28 (-3), Joanna Kluzik Rostkowska - 27 (-7).

The survey was conducted by CBOS (Centre of Research into Polish Public Opinion) on 1192 adult citizens.  (nh)
