• Colourful politician planning comeback?

It has been rumoured that former ruling Civic Platform politician Jan Rokita may be planning his return to politics.

Rokita decided to step down from politics in order to let his wife, Nelli, become advisor to the late President Lech Kaczynski.

Wednesday’s edition of the Super Express daily moots the possibility that Jan Rokita may join the fledgling conservative party Poland Comes First, a splinter group of the opposition Law and Jsutice, stating that it would be “the political transfer of the year.”

Pawel Kowal, an MEP from Poland Comes First, told the Rzeczpospolita daily on Thursday that he has not heard of any such moves or that talks are going ahead in the matter, conceding, however, that “it would be a good idea.”

“[Rokita’s] return to politics would be refreshing,” Kowal adds.

Meanwhile, Rokita’s wife Nelly denies the rumours. “Janek’s not going anywhere,” she told Rzeczpospolita, although she admits that Poland Comes First has tried to persuade Jan Rokita to join the party.

According to Nelli Rokita, the attempt by the party to win over her husband is merely a ploy to divert attention to itself.

Jan Rokita retired from mainstream politics in 2007 when his wife, Nelly, was nominated by then president Lech Kaczynski as an advisor. Since then, he has busied himself with writing newspaper and magazine columns. (jb)
