Two people have died following a collision between a train and a heavy goods vehicle at a level crossing in Mosty near Lebork, north Poland.

Twenty five passengers suffered injuries in the crash on Thursday afternoon, when a cross-country service from Katowice to Gdynia slammed into a lorry hauling a cargo of bricks.

Four carriages and the train’s locomotive derailed as a result of the impact, with reports that the train was travelling at a speed of 110 km/h.

Fourteen fire units took part in the rescue efforts, with two air ambulances also dispatched to the scene.

Krzysztof Lancucki, spokesman for track operator PKP PLK, told the PAP news agency that “visibility was very good and the signals at the level crossing were fully operational.”

Rail traffic is expected to be resumed within a week, but not until 200 metres of new track is laid and 800 metres of overhead power cables are replaced. (jb)
