• Flag Day in Poland
  • 02.05.2011
The second of May is the Day of the National Flag in Poland, which, although not officially a day off work, is meant to make Poles more aware of the history and significance of national symbols.

Coming as it does between two national work-free holidays - Labour Day on 1 May and May 3rd Constitution Day - many people will in fact be taking a long weekend break.

At noon representatives of the government and the military are to participate in a gathering in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw.

The white-and-red flags have been displayed not only at public buildings but also from the windows and balconies of many apartments.

The Presidential Palace, the Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Chancellery are to be illuminated in Polish national colours tonight.

According to a survey by the Homo Homini Institute for Polish Radio, 68 per cent of Poles have a national flag at home but as many as 37 per cent never display it.

In addition to 2 May, there are three days in the year when state and local government institutions are required to fly the Polish flag: Independence Day on November 11, Constitution Day on May 3 and May Day. (mk/pg)
