Following the killing by US troops of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, a government spokesman has said that at present there is no indication of a threat to the safety of President Obama, or Poland, when he visits the country on 27/28 May.

“So far we have no signal that terrorists are interested in our country," spokesman Pawel Gras told Polish Radio on Sunday.

When  asked whether security levels will be tightened when Barack Obama attends the Central and Eastern European summit in Warsaw, Gras said that "our security forces are working on this issue. But these are decisions and actions which are taken out of the limelight and away from the cameras,” adding that "concrete action taken by BOR [the government security agency] and the police who will ensure the safety of our guests."

Advisor to President Bronislaw Komorowski, Tomasz Nałęcz also said yesterday that the visit of the US head of state, and the Central and Eastern European summit, shows that Poland is playing a full role in the region.

"The summit will be dedicated to all those who think that Poland's foreign policy and international position are in decline,” he said. (pg)
