- Angela Merkel talks EU constitution during a visit to Poland
- 16.03.2007
Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Warsaw for talks on the EU Constitution, the possible anti-missile system on Polish soil and the situation of German ‘expellees’ from Poland after WW II.
While delivering a speech at the Warsaw University Merkel called for fresh efforts to agree a new constitution for the 27-nation European Union. She also told students at Warsaw University that the bloc needed a new constitution before 2009.
Germany which is currently holding the rotating EU presidency has made it one of the top priorities to work out a consensus on a new treaty and present a "road map" for ratification at a Brussels summit in June. Meanwhile, the Polish president acknowledged differences on the treaty today.
The second Polish visit of the German chancellor is partly of a private nature. Angela Merkel is accompanied in Poland by her husband, Joachim Sauer who rarely travels with her when she makes a trip outside of Germany.
