After the announcement by the head of the SLD that ex-president Aleksander Kwasniewski will take the party into the next election, an opinion poll confirms that the move would be a popular one with voters.A poll commissioned by the daily "Dziennik”, immediately after the announcement made by Wojciech Olejniczak, head of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) that Aleksander Kwaśniewski would be the party’s most likely candidate for prime minister, reveals that Kwaśniewski is a good left-wing candidate for PM in the eyes of 49 percent of respondents.
37 percent of respondents are of the contrary opinion, 14 percent have no opinion on the subject, whereas more than 50 percent agree that the Left and Democrats (LiD) under Aleksander Kwaśniewski’s leadership will compete efficiently with PiS and PO, with the former president to play the first fiddle.
According to "Dziennik", Kwaśniewski’s offensive is aimed at unifying the Left and Democrats to prepare the party for a coalition with the Civic Platform.
It is part of the same political scenario that led to the establishment of the Movement for Democracy with Wisława Szymborska and Andrzej Olechowski as the most prominent members.
