• LiD proposes superannuation fee veto
  • 25.06.2007
The coalition of ex-communists and other left wing parties, the Left Democrats (LiD) appeal to the president not to sign the bill proposing the reduction of the superannuation fee.

The leaders of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), the Social Democratic Party of Poland (SdPl), the Democratic Party (PD) and the Labor Union (UP) have send a letter to the president regarding this issue, in which they point out that the costs of lowering the superannuation fee will amount to 3 billion zlotys in 2007, and 19 billion in the next year.

LiD stressed that this money could be allocated to health care.

As Wojciech Olejniczak, leader of SLD, stressed at a press conference, vetoing the bill on the reduction of the superannuation fee “will generate the financial means which can be allocated to health care and education.” “In this way we will end this unending protest”, said the SLD politician.

In mid-July the Polish parliament has passed an amendment to the law on the social security system, which will reduce the superannuation fee by 7%.

The amendment assumes that the first stage of the reduction will have taken place by July 1 2007 and will amount to 3% on the side of the employees. After that until January 1, 2008 the fee will be reduced by another 4% - 2% on both the side of the employees and the employers. At present the superannuation fee amounts to 13%. After the reduction, employees will pay 1,5% of the fee and employers 4,5%. (mo)
