• Daily Dziennik claims Lepper was ‘set up’
  • 11.07.2007
Daily "Dziennik"writes that the bribe scandal, which has cost Andrzej Lepper, vice premier and agriculture minister his job in the government, is a plot set up by the Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA).

According to the newspaper’s source, the now infamous plot of land near Mrągowo, which is the focus of the bribery scandal, never existed.

"Dziennik" writes that the operation was aimed at "catching two bribe-takers and expose Andrzej Lepper’s involvement at the same time". The newspaper stresses, however, that the operation was a failure, because the head of Mrągowo administrative district found out by chance that someone had forged his seal.

According to the authors of the article, "The head of Mrągowo administrative district, or even Agriculture Ministry, could have no knowledge on the matter and the plot of the land scandal was only a mystification carried out for CBA’s needs."

Andrzej Lepper was dismissed from his post as both vice-premier and agriculture minister on Monday following the accusations made by the CBA. The opposition has been calling for new elections.

Lepper: I was threatened with elimination

“A man came up to me of Friday and said ‘Today you’ll be eliminated’,” said the ex-PM and ex-minister of agriculture at a press conference Wednesday morning. “Afterwards, I received a phone call ‘today you’ll be finished’.”

According to Lepper, the PM Kaczynski should investigate the possible set-up by the Central Anti-corruption Bureau (CBA), described today by the “Dziennik” and “Rzeczpospolita” dailies.

“Because I don’t believe that the PM is behind it,” said Mr. Lepper. He also informed the press that he is going to demand summoning the secret services commission.
