23% of Poles are ready to think about voting for the League and Self-Defense party (LiS) in the next elections – this is the outcome of the GfK Polonia opinion poll for "Rzeczpospolita" daily. 67% of the respondents indicated that “another politician” than Lepper or Giertych should be the leader of LiS.
LPR and Samoobrona are planning to create a joint party and Andrzej Lepper admitted that opinion polls on public support for it have already been ordered. But not all politicians are pleased at the prospect of a new party.
“No wonder that Lepper wants to join forces with us, because then he would regain control over the party,” claims a source form LPR. Karol Karski from PiS thinks however that both parties won’t gain anything by a merger. “The electorates of both parties don’t sum up, but subtract,” says Karski.
But the polls by GfK Polonia for “Rzeczpospolita” prove him wrong – the new party may have a bigger public support than just a simple sum of the public support of each of them, because whereas Samoobrona’s support is around the election threshold and LPR’s around 2-3%, the new party could be supported by even 23% of Poles.
The main problem is the leadership of the party – there’s little probability of one of the leaders making way for the other. In addition to that, the Poles like neither Giertych nor Lepper and would rather see someone else leading LiS. (mo)
