• Polish Premier to dismantle governing coalition
  • 11.08.2007
After emerging from a meeting with the Polish prime minister, Jarolsaw Kaczyński, Saturday morning, vice-PM, Roman Giertych (photo) told reporters that the ruling coalition will formally be disbanded, Monday.

“The Prime minister has informed me that he is breaking the coalition agreement. The country has been taken over by people from [Kaczynski’s political group],” said Giertych.

On Monday ministers from the League of Polish Families, Giertych’s party, will be dismissed.

According to the leader of League of Polish Families, a junior member of the government coalition since it was formed just over a year ago, Kaczynski’s party, Law and Justice (PiS) are going for early elections because of the recent decision by the electoral commission penalizing PiS over financial irregularities.

Giertych has underlined that Law and Justice and the prime minister himself are responsible for the break up of the coalition.

Giertych, however, thinks that a springtime election would be more in the public interest.

The coalition government has been crumbling ever since Andrzej Lepper of Self defense, another former junior coalition partner, was dismissed from the government after allegedly being involved in a corrupt land deal. Giertych thinks what is most important now is for a special commission be set up to discover the true facts in this matter.
