• Polish PM – October 21 best date for Poland’s election
  • 28.08.2007
Jarosław Kaczyński is of the opinion that 21 October is an optimal date for the early parliamentary election, but the date would depend on how the opposition parties behaved when parliament meets on September 7. He said that the largest opposition groupings - Civic Platform (PO) and Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) - had to vote for the self-dissolution of the Sejm (parliament) if they did not want to become 'a laughing stock'.

Opposition parties have been putting pressure on the government to hold an enquiry, before any election, into the activities of the Aati-Corruption Bureau and the Justice Ministry, which they say have been used by the government for political ends.

He ensured that no arrangements had been made between the government and PO to dissolve the parliament on 7 September, but said that the opposition party leader Donald Tusk had made some promises in a meeting with the president, and now he should keep his word.

Kaczyński also said that a written agreement with PO would be necessary if there were not enough votes for the dissolution of parliament. (photo: Jakub Szymczuk)
