• Polish parliament to dissolve today? - Update
  • 05.09.2007
A meeting of the Convent of Seniors at the Polish Parliament has decided not to hold the vote today. After a stormy session this morning, the Lower House of the Polish Parliament rejected a motion to vote on self-dissolution today and not on Friday as planned.

The opposition Civic Platform (PO) ha dsubmitted a motion to bring forward the vote on the self-dissolution of the parliament from Friday, as originally scheduled, to Wednesday.

One of the leaders of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) Adam Lipinski wanted the Sejm – the parliament - dissolved at the nearest possible opportunity.

“I believe that under existing circumstances, the vote on the motion to dissolve the Sejm should be conducted as early as possible, even today”, said Lipinski.

The MP added that he was not sure if that would be possible due to the pre-arranged agenda. A motion on dissolution requires support from 307 MPs.

Should the motion have passed, the President has 45 days to announce an early election.

Next Friday, the parliament was also to discuss a motion by the League of Polish Families and Self Defence (LiS) on a so-called constructive no-confidence vote in respect of Jarosław Kaczyński’s cabinet.

During today’s session, MPs will also debate on PO’s motion on the dismissal of all of the ministers in Kaczyński’s government.
