Jerzy Achmatowicz has confirmed to Polish Radio Wrocław that he has been offered the post of Polish Ambassador to Mexico. However, Achmatowicz, an employee at Wroclaw University in southwestern Poland, made it clear that for the time being he is not going anywhere since he doesn’t feel well enough prepared to meet such a challenge.
Achmatowicz has not confirmed, as was reported last week, that his candidature was being backed by the controversial head of Radio Maryja, Father Tadeusz Rydzyk.
,br>According to reports, Achmatowicz is close to Radio Maryja’s sponsor Jan Kobylanski, a millionaire currently residing in Uruguay and head of the Union of Polish Societies and Organizations in Latin America (USOPAŁ).
Jerzy Achmatowicz is a Spanish language studies graduate. He lived in Chile and Mexico for 15 years and was, among others, an official translator for the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He is currently working at the Institute of Romance Languages at Wrocław University and is an expert on Latin American history.
