The District Court in Warsaw has rescinded the decision of Poland’s Public Prosecutor’s Office demanding bail to the sum of 100,000 zloty for former Minister of Interior and Administration Janusz Kaczmarek, who had been detained by police in connection with a corruption case. The spokesman for the District Court in Warsaw, Judge Wojciech Małek, explained that, “It was not clear what evidence indicates that the suspect committed the crimes he is accused of, nor was it shown why preventive measures, especially of this kind, should be introduced against the suspect,”.
The District Court in Warsaw also rescinded the decision made by the investigators forbidding Janusz Kaczmarek to leave the country.
The decisions of the court are binding, which means that the Public Prosecutor’s Office can’t appeal them.
Janusz Kaczmarek was detained by police on August 30 after he had been dismissed from the Polish government on suspicion that he leaked a ‘sting operation against the agricultural ministry to former minister Andrzej Lepper.
Kaczmarek has always denied that he was the source of the leak and had not obstructed the course of justice.
Both Lepper and Kaczmarek accused justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro as being the source of the leak.
The whole affair consequently led to the break up of the ruling coalition and has led to early elections in Poland, scheduled for October 21.
