• Polish Speaker expects ‘fierce’ election campaign

In an interview with Polish Radio this morning, Ludwik Dorn, the speaker of the Polish parliament, said he expects a fierce election campaign and a close run result come the day of the ballot on October 21. In Ludwik Dorn’s opinion, the distribution of power in the Sejm after the election will be similar to the current one.

"I don’t believe that any of the two parties leading in the pre-election polls will rule single-handedly", the speaker of the house said.

He added that the campaign by Law and Justice (PiS) would aim at gaining enough seats to ensure an independent PiS government, but admitted that a coalition government scenario was more probable.

On the subject of the statement made by for defence minister Radosław Sikorski on Wednesday that he would be standing as opposition Civic Platform’s (PO) candidate in the approaching elections, Ludwik Dorn said it could be a sign of the party leader, Donald Tusk’s weakness.

"One may think that the PO leader cannot count on his own people", Dorn said.

Radek Sikorski was defence minister until January this year for the Law and Justice government but has defected to the opposition.

"The chairman believes his party is full of unattractive flowers or even weeds and the attempt at replanting one herb from the PiS garden is a great success in his eyes. We are not saying it’s a poisonous herb, but it is very far from fresh", the speaker commented.

He also said that the Law and Justice was not afraid of Sikorski’s criticism of their rule: "We are not afraid of any truth, as it will always work to our advantage", the speaker of the parliament stressed. (photo: jakub szymczuk)
