Nelly Rokita, wife of Jan Rokita, one of the leaders of the main opposition party Civic Platform (PO) is to work as an advisor to President Lech Kaczyński.

She is to advise him on matters concerning women.

“I hope I am the right person in the right place and that I am able to mobilize Polish women,” said Nelly Rokita during a press conference at the President’s Palace.

Asked whether she consulted about her decision with her husband, she answered “A clever man always stands by his woman.”

Nelly Rokita has been a member of the European Union of Women for years.

Lately, the media has been speculating whether she would stand as a candidate for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS). – the main rival of her husband’s party.

Nelly Rokita didn’t deny this, but said she hasn’t yet decided whether to stand in the election of October 21.

Brother of the president, PM Jarosław Kaczyński, commented that there is always a place for Nelly Rokita in PiS.

Mrs. Rokita left her husband’s party in January, protesting against what she saw as the marginalization of her husband - said to be in conflict with the head of the party, Donald Tusk.

She is famous for controversial statements – before the elections in 2005 she stated in an interview that PO “is not ready to rule alone”. (Polskie Radio Szczecin)
