• Poland’s PM says last two years have been a ‘success’
  • 26.09.2007
Premier Jarosław Kaczyński told Polish Radio 1 this morning that in his opinion, the two years of the Law and Justice (PiS) rule has been a great success, considering the circumstances, and said that nothing would have been achieved in Poland without the coalition with controversial, and rocky, coalition with two fringe parties, the League of Polish Families (LPR) and Self Defence.

When asked about the main achievements of his givernment, the PM said his party had managed to improve Poland, protected the Polish interest abroad and taken advantage of the economic boom.

He reminded that the unemployment rate went down and 1.3 million new jobs were created during his rule.

In Kaczyński’s assessment, the developments will be threatened if the opposition Civic Platform (PO) and Left and Democrats alliance (LiD) come into power.

When asked what he meant when he said a few days ago that if those parties formed a coalition government it would be like “the new December 13, 1981 (imposition of martial law), he meant that the ‘on-going positive processes would be interrupted in Poland’.

"The words were harsh, but they reflect reality", PM stressed.

Kaczyński said that the challenge put down by former president Aleksander Kwasniewski (LiD) for a televised debate would have to be accepted. He did not exclude a debate with Donald Tusk from the opposition PO either, but only if the PO leader “has more to say than he has now”. According to Jarosław Kaczyński, his debate with Kwaśniwwski is likely to be held early next week.
