• Poles want OSCE to observe election
  • 26.09.2007
A poll commissioned by GfK Polonia indicates that 57 per cent Poles want OSCE observers to be invited to observe the parliamentary election in Poland.

This contradictions remarks made by the Polish government last week which stated that the country was a democracy and did not need election observers watching over the ballot.

Out of 500 people asked by GfK Polonia if OSCE observers should be invited to watch the election, 31 per cent “strongly agreed”, 26 per cent “somewhat agreed", 10 per cent "strongly disagreed" and 14 per cent “somewhat disagreed". 19 per cent "did not know" if the observers’ presence was necessary.

Since last week OSCE spokesperson and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been trying to come to an agreement.

And PM Jarosław Kaczyński is not now excluding the possibility that the government will change its mind.

"If OSCE make changes to the content of their note, we’ll review our position. The note contains some inappropriate formulations”, Jarosław Kaczyński said.
