Liberal opposition leader of Civic Platform (PO) Donald Tusk has asked to debate with listeners on the ultra conservative Radio Maryja. “I think it is an opportunity for a Civic Platform member to present his views to people who usually approach this party with a great dose of skepticism. If, as it seems, PM Kaczyński has some fears and reservations, then maybe his media protector will prove more courageous”, claims Donald Tusk.
But those close to the radio station, headed by the controversial father Tadeusz Rydzyk doubt whether he will be asked to appear on the radio station.
“This would offend the listeners”, says Anna Sobecka, who is running for a seat in the parliament as Law and Justice (PiS) candidate. “If I am correct, it was Mr. Tusk who offended elderly female listeners referring to them as ‘mohair berets’”, adds Sobecka, former journalist for Radio Maryja.
“For about two years now we have been constantly hearing mocking comments about Radio Maryja’s listeners. If he was to go on air it would equal a grave offense to the listeners”, thinks Sobecka.
The radio station set up by the Redemptorists declared at the very beginning of the election campaign that it would not express support of any sort to whichever political option.
Despite this statements, the only politicians to appear in Radio Maryja’s broadcast are almost exclusively Law and Justice (PiS) members and virtually every conversation ends in a question: “Why is it worth voting for Law and Justice”.
