The National Prosecutor’s Office is looking into the origin of former Polish president, Aleksander Kwaśniewski and his wife Jolanta’s assets. Investigators are reviewing the cash flows on the bank accounts of the former presidential couple, writes daily "Dziennik".
The investigation commenced after the publication of the so-called “Oleksy tapes” - secret recordings of a private conversation between former Polish PM Józef Oleksy (and former member of the Democratic Left Alliance - SLD) and Polish gas tycoon Aleksander Gudzowaty.
In September 2006, Oleksy alleged that Kwaśniewski had accumulated his assets in an illegal way and might have a problem accounting for them. Oleksy mentioned Kwaśniewski’s properties, including a 400 square-metre luxury apartment in Warsaw, a house in Kazimierz Dolny and a residence in Jazgarzewo near Warsaw.
Jerzy Gajewski, head of the Office for the Investigation of Organised Crime in Katowice has refused to reveal any details.
He has only said that the investigation is under way and no charges have been presented yet.
According to the daily’s sources, the investigators have already found out how much Kwaśniewkis paid for their properties.
The prosecution has also compared the former president’s tax self-assessments with his income.
They are also checking registers of assets listing the gifts that the presidential couple received when Kwaśniewski was in office, as well as the donors’ details.
The investigators will also scrutinize the finances of the foundations “Communication without Barriers” established by Jolanta Kwaśniewska and “Amicus Europae” set up by the former head of state.
