• Radek Sikorski not to become Poland’s foreign minister

It is still unknown who will head the Polish foreign ministry after Sunday’s election of a new government, as the candidature of Radosław Sikorski has been unexpectedly questioned by Donald Tusk, who does not want the former defence minister in Jarosław Kaczyński’s government to head Polish diplomacy.

Bronisław Komorowski (Civic Platform - PO) is to become speaker of the parliament and Waldemar Pawlak (Peasants’ Party - PSL) - vice premier and minister of economy following the first round of negotiations between the two coalition partners.

Dziennik reveals that two other candidates for the position - Professor Władysław Bartoszewski (former Polish foreign minister) and Jerzy Buzek (former Polish prime minister) have turned down Tusk’s proposal, so the next likely candidate for the position is Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, currently the head of foreign commission in the European Parliament.

Radek Sikorski was formerly the defence minister in the Kaczynski government until early this year when he was asked to resign after a conflict with the prime minister.

He then later switched parties at the beginning of the election campaign.

Bogdan Zdrojewski, who has been rumoured to assume the position of defence minister or minister of culture, will not be a member of the government at all according to Dziennik. The key position in the ministry of education has been proposed to senator Jarosław Gowin.

The daily also reveals that beside Waldemar Pawlak, the PO-PSL coalition government will also include two more PSL members - Marek Sawicki as agriculture minister and Stanisław Żelichowski as minister of the environment. (photo: senate.gov.pl)
