The new Polish Parliament - the Sejm - will be convened and the current government will step down on Monday. It is still unclear, however, whether President Lech Kaczynski will accept the nomination of Donald Tusk as prime minister. The formation of the new government will mostly depend on President Lech Kaczyński, who now has two weeks for the appointment of a new prime minister.
The President is expected to appear at the opening session of the parliament, but he will only address the Senate.
The new MPs in the Lower House will hear a speech by the current PM Jarosław Kaczyński instead.
President Lech Kaczynski has not made it clear yet when he will appoint a new PM or if Civic Platform leader Doland Tusk will be his choice for the position – though convention dictates that as leader of the largest party in parliament, he will be.
In an interview with daily Rzeczpospolita Lech Kaczyński has said that before he appoints the new PM, he wants to see the coalition agreement between the Civic Platform (PO) and the Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL).
“Our constitution also clearly defines the second stage of the appointment of a new government by the parliament. Shortly, it does take into account a possible conflict between the president and the parliament regarding the appointment of prime minister (...) I haven’t decided yet what steps to take”, the president ha said.
