Bronisław Komorowski of Civic Platform (PO) has become a new Speaker of the Lower House of the Polish Parliament – the Sejm and Bogdan Borusewicz, a non-partisan supported by PO, was re-elected as the Senate’s Speaker.

“Parliament is the heart of democracy. When this heart beats nervously, rapidly or too slowly, it causes social disapproval. When the heart beats clearly, steadily and strongly, then citizens and voters look in their future with hope and faith that Polish matters go in the right direction,” the new Speaker said after the election.

Komorowski gained 292 votes and his opponent, Krzysztof Putra of the opposition Law and Justice – 160 votes.

New Senate’s speaker Bogdan Borusewicz run unopposed: 61 Senators voted in favour of his candidature, 37 were against.

Borusewicz was the chairman of the Higher House of the Polish Parliament also in the previous term.
