• Prosecution want former MP Beata Sawicka detained
  • 19.11.2007

A court in Poznań will hear the prosecution’s complaint about the jury’s decision not to detain the former Civic Platform (PO) MP who has been charged with corruption.

Prosecution claim that the gravity of the charges (10 years’ sentence) and the risk of chicanery are strong enough arguments for the detention of the former PO politician.

The former PO MP is accused of encouragement to corruption and paid protection.

According to the investigators, Beata Sawicka said she could set up a tender for the purchase of a plot of land in Hel (North Poland) using her alleged connections for which she took 100,000 zlotys bribe.

Sawicka was arrested two weeks ago at a hotel in Poznań after the exipry of her parliamentary immunity, but was released, because the court in Poznań overruled a motion for her detention.

Today’s court decision in the case will be final.(mj)
