• Ex Law and Justice MP comments on EU Treaty
  • 14.12.2007

Paweł Zalewski, one of the three PiS ‘rebel’ MPs said on Polish Radio 3 Friday morning that the signature of the treaty reforming the EU signed yesterday in Lisbon was very important for Poland and Europe.

Zalewski believes Poland’s role and importance within UE will now grow.

The former PiS member, who resigned from the party this week, told the radio that the Lisbon Treaty gave Europe new instruments to conduct foreign policy more effectively.  He said the Treaty would lead to the development of a new European common foreign policy and would facilitate better cooperation among all of the EU members.

“Such activities will call for a stronger political will, which is already better than, say, two years ago”, Zalewski said and added, “The mechanism of reaching agreement among EU states will be reinforced by introducing the institution of EU president playing the role of chairman of the Council of Europe.”

Paweł Zalewski said that if the Treaty came into effect in 2009, Poland’s importance would increase significantly and negotiations with countries such as Russia would become easier, as they would be based on entirely new rules. (mj)
