• Former Polish president retires from politics

Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has officially announced his retirement from politics.

In an interview for the Dziennik daily, Kwaśniewski said: “I did all the good I could do. I hope I did not do any harm.”

According to Kwaśniewski, the present situation of the Left and Democrats (LiD) – in October’s election last year they achieved just 13 percent of the vote with 53 seats in parliament - is not as good as it should be.

“The left has a long way to go. The time spent in opposition should be a good chance to build a convincing programme, reach people with it, especially the young,” said the former president.

Asked if LiD can still count on his help, Kwaśniewski assured that he ended his relations with the left on the day of the last elections, but that he can still offer counsel.
