The Left and Democrats (LiD) describe plans mooted by Prime Minister Donald Tusk to abolish the upper house of parliament as ‘populist’.

The party's head, Wojciech Olejniczak, has stated that Prime Minister Donald Tusk's proposals concerning abolishing the Senate and cutting down the number of members in the lower house are a display of populism and are merely intended to serve Tusk's own aims.

Therefore, according to Olejniczak, the discussion concerning the amendments should be held not only by the media, but also an appropriate body.

He wants President Kaczynski to create a Constitutional Council to work on the possible amendments to the constitution.

Olejniczak announced that invitations to participate in the council's proceedings would be forwarded to former presidents, the ombudsman, as well as the speakers of both chambers of parliament.

Olejniczak informed the media that he had already asked Marian Filar, professor of law and member of the party, to head a task force to probe into the issue of amending the constitution. (mn)
