• Polish Left on verge of disintegration?
  • 04.03.2008

Jan Litynski of the centerist Democratic Party (PD) has told the Polish Radio One that he doesn’t exclude a complete disintegration of the Left Democrat alliance.

According to Litynski, the issue of possible separation of the left wing and democratic parties is to be decided in a few months’ time.

The PD representative said that his party may decide to leave the coalition if hard left elements in the largest alliance member, the ex-communist Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) prove to be victorious in internal party battles.

Litynski reminded that when his party, the Democrats, decided to enter the alliance with the left wing SLD and the Social Democratic Party of Poland (SdPl) they hoped for a creation of a strong central-left formation.

The politician said that because of the conservative-liberal tendencies of the present government on the political scene there is room for the central, liberal and socially oriented Democratic Party.

The coalition of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), the Social Democratic Party of Poland (SdPl), the Democratic Party (PD) and the Labor Union (UP) was created in 2006. But the Left in general has failed to recover from a poor showing in the last two general elections in Poland and current poll rating of under 10 percent show that they have yet to regain support.
