Marek Borowski of the Left Democrats has told Polish Radio One this morning that the US antimissile shield in Poland will decrease the country’s security and advised caution during negotiations in the USA.
Borowski said that Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is currently visiting the USA, should conduct the negotiations is a way that would avoid signing the agreement with the present Bush administration.
The politician reminded that the Democrats, who are likely to win the forthcoming elections in the USA, are much more sceptical of the need for the anti-missile shield and that it remains to be seen how they will treat the ideas of their predecessors.
Borowski said that equipping the Polish army with Patriot rockets, which is one of Poland’s demands in exchange for the deployment, wouldn’t improve Poland’s security, but only destabilize the international balance of power. According to the politician, it would be much more effective to create broad anti-terrorist alliances, with Russia’s participation included.
The politician stressed that for Poland co-operation with European states should be more important than with the USA.
Currently, Poland’s PM Donald Tusk is paying an official visit to the United States. Today, the PM is to meet with President Bush, to discuss, among others, the possible deployment of the elements of the US defence system in Poland. (jm)
