• Government appeals for unity over Lisbon Treaty
  • 14.03.2008

The Speaker of the Polish Lower House, Bronislaw Komorowski has appealed to the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party for compromise on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

Law and Justice have tabled amendments to the Lisbon Treaty Ratification Bill demanding the reintroduction of a preamble and other measures.

Komorowski said Friday morning that the ratification of the Treaty would be in the interest of Poland, and support from PiS was necessary for Poland’s endorsement of the document. To get the bill through parliament some members of Law and Justice must vote with the government.

Komorowski said that PiS MPs absence in the parliamentary clubs’ meeting Friday morning, devoted to the Treaty ratification gave cause for concern and could spell further problems.

The spokesman for Law and Justice’s parliamentary club, Mariusz Kaminski, criticised the latest draft bill saying it lacked the most important provisions suggested by the opposition party.

Zbigniew Chlebowski (PO) said the draft presented by his party was final and the opposition’s refusal to approve was unexplainanle. Chlebowski also appealed to President Lech Kaczynski to convince his twin brother Jaroslaw, the Chairman of PiS, to accept the draft in its current form.

The second reading of the draft Lisbon Treaty Ratification Bill will be held in the Sejm on Tuesday.
