• Monument to the Absurd in Poland?
  • 17.03.2008

The controversial member of parliament has proposed to erect a Monument of the Polish Absurd during a meeting of the Civic Platform (PO) party in Piotrkow Trybunalski, central Poland.

Palikot, notorious for his allegations concerning President Lech Kaczynski's alleged alcohol problem, is the head of the parliamentary commission Przyjazne Panstwo (Citizen-friendly State).

The commission's job is to look for absurd regulations in the economy, administration and other domains of public life.

During the meeting Palikot mentioned several absurd regulations that in his opinion deserved a monument, like the one which obliges a chess player entering a tournament to produce a doctor's statement certifying his good health.

Internet users have been sending e-mails to the commission for over a month now saying which regulations they consider the most ridiculous. The commission's website has already been visited by 27,000 people. Over 2,000 motions for abolishing absurd regulations have been submitted. (mn)
