• Poles divided over Lisbon Treaty
  • 17.03.2008

According to an opinion poll by the PBS DGA research centre, 56 percent of Poles do not know how they would vote in a possible referendum on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

The Radio Information Agency (IAR) reports that 36 percent of respondents were for ratifying the treaty, 6 percent against, while 3 percent chose the answer ‘it's hard to say’.

Views on the very idea of calling a referendum were also divided - 42 percent of respondents were for a referendum, but the same number were for a parliamentary ratification of the treaty; 16 percent were of no opinion.

According to the poll, people who would vote for ratifying the treaty are mostly male, over 40 years of age and with a higher education. People who would vote against are over 60 and have vocational secondary education.

The poll was conducted on Sunday, from a representative sample of 500.
