What remains of the coalition of left wing politicians have decided to change their name from Left and Democrats (LiD) to the ‘Left Club’.
Wojciech Olejniczak, head of the largest party in what remains of the coalition, the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), said that all MPs were in favour of changing the name of the club to signify a new orientation towards leftists active outside parliament and deepening co-operation with trade unions.
The Left Club now consists of 40 MPs from SLD and two remaining lawmakers from the Social Democracy of Poland (SdPl).
SdPl leader Marek Borowski and seven other members of the party left the LiD parliamentary club last week..
The two SdPl parliamentarians who stayed in what is now the Left Club said that they are against dividing the Polish left into various political factions.
Last weekend the members of SdPl decided to leave the LiD coalition built with SLD and the Labour Union (UP) after SLD ended the cooperation with the Democratic Party (PD) without consulting other members. (jm)
