Today is the first anniversary of the death of Barbara Blida, an ex-minister of construction in a previous left wing government, who committed suicide last year.
Barbara Blida shot herself last April in her bathroom, shortly after officers from the Internal Security Agency (ABW) came to search her house and detain her in connection with corruption in coal trade.
Blida was thought to be involved in a corrupt practices while minister of construction.
Blida’s death shook the Polish political scene. A parliamentary investigation committee was set up to clarify all aspects of the incident, including the legality of detaining Blida and if the officers conducted the search according to correct procedures.
A confidential police report on the suicide of MP Barbara Blida, prepared after a year’s investigation, revealed that in spite of the enormous amount of evidence gathered, it is impossible to recreate the events which led to the death. The report points out major faults and fundamental inconsistencies in the evidence.
Barbara Blida, former MP and minister in the government of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), was a well-known personality in the Silesian region. (jm)
