• Opposition call for no confidence in Finance Minister
  • 05.06.2008

Head of the opposition Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, told Polish Radio One this morning that his party is to file a motion of no confidence in Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski.

Kaczynski had already warned that Rostowski should expect a vote of no confidence if he fails to lower the excise duty on fuel in Poland.

Kaczynski said that he is aware of the fact that the governing coalition has numerical advantage in the parliament, but Law and Justice is determined to file the motion anyway, as the party believes that the Polish Finance Ministry is not working properly and the government is not fighting the prices getting higher and higher.

The Law and Justice leader added that when it comes to citizens’ interests, the government should accept the rightful arguments of the opposition.

The Cabinet has been under pressure to reduce tax on fuel in the hope of cutting the price at the pump, as oil prices reach record breaking levels. The Minister of Finance Jacek Rostowski, however, said a few days ago that there are no plans for such reduction. (jm)
