• Village leader says ‘no’ to anti-missile shield

The leader of the council of Redzikowo, the anticipated location of the anti-missile shield in Poland, will campaign against the installation of rockets in his village.

Mariusz Chmiel, leader of the borough of Redzikowo near Slupsk, north-western Poland, has told Radio Gdansk that he will pursue every administrative avenue to block the construction of the US rocket launching pads in his neighbourhood.

Chmiel revealed that his strategy would be to use every possible administrative stumbling block to discourage the Americans from installing their rockets in Redzikowo.

In the borough leader’s opinion, an American military base in his village could have an adverse effect on the borough, as it would lose 430 hectares of land to the US military. Mariusz Chmiel would prefer a passenger airport rather than a military airfield and rocket silos in Redzikowo, he said.

Elements of the US anti-missile shield will be located at a disused airfield in the village of Redzikowo, only four kilometres from the centre of Slupsk in the northwest. (IAR) (mj)
