• Left politician reaches agreement with weekly
  • 03.09.2008

The lawsuit filed by former prime minister ozef Oleksy against the Wprost weekly ended in a settlement.

The left-wing politician took the magazine to court for publishing parts of a private conversation with businessman Aleksander Gudzowaty, in which Oleksy heavily criticized his colleagues from the Democratic Left Alliance.

Jozef Oleksy initially demanded an official apology and 100,000 zloty be given to a charity.

Wprost published parts of the conversation, secretly recorded by the businessman, in 2007. In it, Oleksy questioned the legality of former president Aleksander Kwasniewski's fortune and used coarse language while criticizing other left-wing leaders.

The revelations brought about a severe crisis in the left, Oleksy was expelled from his party and resigned from politics.

The editor and publisher of the weekly apologised to the politician. The paper stressed, however, that this does not change its stance that private opinions of public persons such as politicians should be published if they differ from what they say officially.
