Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, who joined PM Donald Tusk at the EU summit in Brussels yesterday, believes that the Polish delegation in unison represented Polish strategic interests.

Summing up the first day of the EU summit, Kaczynski said that PM Tusk’s and his stance on the proposed Energy and Climate Package don’t differ and on this matter Poland is likely to achieve great success. He explained, however, that the condition of the success is an accord.

“We need to act together, and not separately,” he stressed.

Poland is against the European Commission’s ‘climate package,’ which is to severely limit carbon dioxide emissions. It would be difficult for Poland, as the country’s power industry is based 95 percent on coal.

President Kaczynski said that his voice in Brussels was needed and that his co-operation with the PM was “great”. He pointed out that the EU leaders picked up the Polish politicians’ unanimity.

The President added that in the future he also intends to participate in the European Union summits.

For the past week, Poland has been watching yet another row over who controls Poland’s foreign policy: the PM or the President. The issue who is to go to Brussels was only one of a series of disputes on this matter. (jm)
