The district court in Lublin has dropped allegations against Janusz Palikot of the ruling Civic Platform party, who called for a public enquiry into whether President Lech Kaczynski has an alcohol problem.

The businessman and politician, who owns shares in a distillery in Lublin, south-east Poland, also called the president an 'oaf' during a televised interview in July.

The court in Lublin declared that Palikot's question statements possible alcoholism of President Kaczynski did not constitute a public offence.

After giving the verdict, Judge Jerzy Daniluk, who presided over the case, said that, "Abuse can be understood as a behavioural act of contempt towards another person. [This was not apparent] on Mr. Palikot's blog post which queried the president's possible drink problem."
