Former president and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Lech Walesa is not on the list of attendees to the Gala Ball to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of Independence Day on 11 November.
Lech Kaczynski invited heads of 55 nations, including George W. Bush, Nicholas Sarkozy, Dmitri Medvedev and Angela Merkel. Only Chancellor Merkel of Germany has confirmed her attendance.
According to Piotr Kownacki, head of the President’s Office, President Kaczynski simply did not include Walesa on the list of guests. He declined to give a reason.
The reported reaction from Walesa: “If my wife is in the mood to dance, then we will go to another ball. You can party anywhere.”
The ball is to be held in the Great Theatre on Independence Day, 11 November, following a day of speeches and military exercises on Pilsudski Square in Warsaw. (mmj)
