• PM Tusk: Poland’s government good for difficult times
  • 17.11.2008

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has positively evaluated the first year of his government’s activities and pointed out that the time for a sum-up will come at the end of the parliament’s term of office.

In a special interview for Polish Television, the head of the government said that the Poles still pin their hopes for the government on the Civic Platform (PO) and the Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL).

The PM added that the government is three-quarters ahead of the way. “It is a good government for difficult times,” he stressed.

According to Donald Tusk, the public opinion polls indicate that his party still enjoys significant public approval ratings, much larger than during the previous ruling government under Jaroslaw Kaczynski. He pointed out, however, that the evaluation of the party is not the defining element to positively evaluate government effectiveness.

Donald Tusk called also for “a truce” between the government, the opposition and president Lech Kaczynski. The past year saw numerous conflicts between the Cabinet and the Presidential Palace. According to the PM, the co-operation between the two centres of power and the opposition will be necessary in some key issues, some among others for Poland to join the euro zone and effectively fight the economic crisis.
