• Pawlak: “iPads a must for every student”
  • 27.05.2010

Deputy PM and presidential hopeful, Waldemar Pawlak is continuing his campaign trail by promoting new technologies for pupils and students across Poland.

“Every student should have a tablet [computer] instead of a satchels [full of books], best run with open source programmes, of course,” Pawlak told the Rzeczpospolita daily.

“I think it’s a closer perspective than we imagine,” Pawlak muses, adding that “the cost of such a device is not that expensive compared to three years’ worth of books at elementary school.”

With low ratings in the polls, the presidential hopeful from the Polish Peasant's Party (PSL) is advocating more than just new technologies in the classroom and lecture hall.

In his interview with the daily, Waldemar Pawlak said “internet access nowadays is essential for everyday life, like air and water,” adding that “free internet access across the country should be a priority for any future president.”

The presidential hopeful himself owns an iPad, and wants every child in Poland to be issued with one. “During the course of one [presidential] term it could be possible,” Pawlak told Rzeczpospolita.

Currently the iPad is not officially on sale in Poland, but can be bought from internet auction sites such as Allegro for a sum between 2,100 – 2,800 zloty (510 – 680 euro). (jb)
