• Left reaches out to 'yoof'
  • 09.06.2010

In an attempt to raise his profile among younger voters, Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) supporters have released a pop tune, and a rap, in praise of presidential candidate Grzegorz Napieralski.

The other candidates could be envious: two tracks have been released supporting the 36 year-old left wing presidential hopeful.

The 2Sisters girl band (pictured) have recorded a version of their national finals Eurovision Song Contest entry Come one (hear on Myspace page) with changed lyrics. Instead of the original, “Come on/baby come one,/move your body,” 2Sisters implore Poles to tick Napieralski’s box on June 20.

Re-titled There are millions of us (see video below) the new version points to the SLD candidate’s potential ‘yoof’ appeal.

"There are millions of us, together we will conquer the world/ It's your future, your new self/ Why do you still hesitate?/ After all, you already know that he will change the country, will make it a better place/ …Internet and development/You’re asking who’s going to do that/Do you know Napieralski?”, sing the two blondes with “Napieralski for president” emblazoned across their t-shirts.

The tune was inspired by the Obama song, a video hit during the US presidential elections, admits Tomasz Kalita from Napieralski’s electoral staff.

Left Rap

But 2Sisters are merely following in the footsteps of Napieralski song by unknown, but keen, rappers, who were first off the mark in praise of their candidate - this time in cod-hip hop style.

The rap has the chorus: “Yeah, yeah, yeah, SLD, Napieralski leads you/We will win - you and me/It’s the left’s new rhythm/“Grzesiek, don’t give up!"

The rappers encourage contact with Napieralski, currently on under 10 percebt support in opinion polls, via social network sites.

“Nasza-klasa [Polish equivalent of Friends Reunited], Facebook and Twitter/Napieralski comes with a brand new beat/Whisper something on Blip, Grzesiek will respond/”.

Once again, the rap reads like a Napieralski manifesto. “Internet for all, even in village schools/Subsidies, decent kindergartens, money for IVF/Equality, freedom and challenges. Like Zapatero, Blair or Obama.”

A video for the song will be released soon, says the Napieralski campaign team.

Disco Polo vote

But this is not the first time pop tunes have been released in support of SLD candidates. During Aleksander Kwasniewski’s first election campaign for president in 1995, he became the favourite of Disco Polo bands, a style of music unique to Poland at that time, mixing elements of pop, even rap, with folk tunes, usually accompanied by cheesy-cheap Casio keyboards.

Queen of Disco Polo, Shazza, lent Kwasniewski her support after he said he liked her music. And then Top One released their election campaign Disco Polo opus Olek,Olek, the diminutive for Aleksander.

Kwasniewski was elected twice as Poland’s president. (pg/mg)
