• Race to purchase Poland’s leading telecom
  • 09.02.2011

Twenty companies, including Sweden’s TeliaSonera and Spain’s Telefonica, are interested in buying Poland’s largest mobile phone operator Polakomtel.

The sale of Polkomtel, which is likely to reach 16 billion zloty (4 billion euro), may be the largest transaction on the European telecom market in years.

The most probable buyer of Polkomtel, operator of the Plus network, is thought to be Zygmunt Solorz-Zak, Polish media tycoon who owns Polsat TV, telecom operator Sferia and several internet providers. Among the companies which submitted offers are also Sweden’s TeliaSonera, Spain’s Telefonica and Norway’s Telenor.

The shareholders of Polkomtel are: PKN Orlen, the largest Polish oil company, KGHM Polish copper, British Vodafone – each holding 24.4 percent, PGE Polish Energy Group with 21.8 percent and Węglokoks, coal exporter with 4.9 percent of shares.

Initial offers for Polkomtel will probably be open to 21 February. (mg)
