Unemployment will drop from 13 to 10 percent in Poland by the end of the year, claims deputy labour minister Czeslawa Ostrowska.

The changes in the labour market are on the right track, assures the official, who told Polish Radio that “all the estimates of macroeconomists point to a significant upswing in the country’s economy.”

“Forecasts made by employers are optimistic in terms of admitting new staff, though recruitment is to pick up after the first quarter of the year,” Ostrowska added, adding that “we will see how the situation in the labour market unfolds.”

Czeslawa Ostrowska stressed the importance of occupational development of the professionally inactive. “Even if the training does not bring about immediate employment, frequenting courses is a better option than to idle away at home,” added Ostrowska.

The country’s GDP is expected to exceed 4 percent in 2011, announced head of the National Bank of Poland, Marek Belka last week. According to the Labour Ministry, the unemployment rate rose by 0.8 percentage points in January to reach 13.1 percent from December. (aba/jb)
