A protest has been organised by mining unions in Katowice, the capital of Silesia and the heart of the southern coal basin.

Some 5,000 demonstrators are marching against the catastrophic, in their opinion, financial condition of coal extraction companies and the idleness of their managements in dealing with the state of affairs.

Much criticism has also been levelled at the government for ignoring the situation and plight of the mining community.

“They’re cutting our bonuses, pressing us with targets we can’t meet with this equipment. The government and media are treating us like rubbish. We’re asking the Prime Minister to wake up. This has to change!,” shouted the angry unionists.

Dominik Kolorz, head of the miners’ Solidarity trade union, told Polish Radio the Friday protest is a final warning signal for decision makers and employers. (ss/jb)
